JEANNE PETROSKY DENNIS GUZENSKI
acrylic paintings on hand made paper
how we think
Why do you work in paper?
Great question! There is a long answer that we can discuss in person, but the short answer is: I have a fine art and craft background. Went into advertising to make a living. In 1987 I met a woman at a party that had made the paper invitations. I said "I'd like to try that". The rest, as they say, "is history". I fell in love with papermaking the process was easy and my creativity immediately went crazy.
Why don't you just buy paper?
There is something from starting from the ground up and that is what we are doing. Creating our own paper gives us the option of putting in textures, which gives the art another element to explore. Plus it gives us the liberty to create custom sizes and textures, and thus allows us to tailor the papers exactly to your needs. The papers are created in our studio by hand using 100% acid free cotton fibers to insure the highest quality and longevity of the art.
Why not work on canvas?
I've considered that, but hand made paper has elements intrinsic to it that can't be duplicate on canvas. The deckled edge is a prime example. Plus, again the texture and the general irregularities.
What is your inspiration?
Simplicity. Creating a space to rest and breathe.
How do you collaborate?
Another great question! There are some general guidelines. I'd say that Dennis is more the tecnical person, making the paper, making the structures and putting them all togehter. I am more the designer and colorist . HOWEVER, where there are guidlines, there are always exceptions. Bringing in the tree element strictly came from Dennis. He draws them out and I do the coloration. It works!
